Smoke and Storm

I think I've found my new favourite wintry nail polish: Sportsgirl Smoke. I've had my eye on it for a while, but for some reason didn't feel compelled to purchase it. As much as the colour appealed to me, I had reservations about whether it would work with my skin tone. After being alerted by Tezza that it was now on sale, I made sure to stop by my nearest Sportsgirl the next day to pick it up. I'm glad I did because it's the perfect concoction of mushroom, taupe, light grey and purple. I'd describe it as a slightly puttyish, smokey grey with dusty purple undertones that become more prominent depending on the light.

The main reason I was drawn to Smoke was because of its similarity to one of my favourite nail polishes, Storm (also by Sportsgirl). I've previously compared Storm alongside Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Wet Cement, and I'm still trying to find a polish as close to it as possible. Swatching Storm and Smoke next to each other, Storm is noticeably darker and more blue-toned, with almost imperceptible silver microshimmer. Smoke is much more grey and warmer. I'm liking the lightness and neutrality of Smoke, with the touch of purple that adds interest and sophistication. Storm needs only one coat for opaque coverage, but Smoke was still a little patchy even with 3 coats.

  3. All your posts on Sportsgirl nail polishes makes me want to check them out. Even though it's quite lovely and interesting, I'm not sure this colour would work on me. It does look nice on your paws though :)

  5. Apparently, it suits your skin tone! It's the same problem for me... ... whenever I want a neutral, whether grayish, purplish or pinkish, I hesitate for so long because I never know which one will look good on my skin. It's too hard to tell even from other people's blog.

  6. I was just at Sportsgirl yesterday- I better hit up the nail polish sales! Your posts make me really want All That Glitters even though I've been neglecting nail polish for weeks now. Those colours look great on your skin tone! Update moreee. With a May Favourites or something. My favourite blogs are all slowing down with their posts and I'm impatient. :P x

    1. Lol, thank you for the sweet comment and encouragement :) I'll try to do a June Favourites since May is pretty far into the past now :p Nail polish is just a fun way of injecting a bit of colour and glitter into my day, especially since I have the luxury of a fairly large collection to choose from. If you're not a fan of glitter polishes (either by themselves or as a top coat) you probably won't be all that enamoured of All That Glitters, otherwise, I highly recommend it as it just gives that extra sparkle and oomph to the nail. Gold hex glitter is just so versatile that way :) The good thing about Sportsgirl's nail polish is that a lot of shades frequently go on sale - discounted to $4.95 and sometimes even cheaper when they have their sale on already discounted stock.

  13. Great job with the manicure considering the formula complaints! I hate applying streaky/patchy polishes, but I love cream finishes...its so hard to find a good smooth cream!! Gorgeous colour!

  35. Both of these colours looks amazing!! I sometimes wonder why the products in the same range will differ so much in terms of quality.

I was very much drawn to the Dior Addict lipstick range because of Kate Moss too. I am addicted to lipsticks too, and blushes.
